How to measure measurements on clothes correctly?

What you will need A soft tape measure works best — it's flexible and follows the shape of your dog's body easily. If you don't have one, use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler afterwards.

How to measure your dog Always measure your dog standing up, calm and in a natural position. Don't pull the tape too tight, but don't leave it loose either — it should rest gently against the body. Measure each point twice to be sure.

A — Neck circumference Measure where your dog normally wears their collar. The tape should fit snugly but not squeeze. This measurement matters most for collars, pull-over tops and certain harness styles.

B — Chest circumference This is the most important measurement of all. Measure the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Most clothing and harness sizes are based on chest circumference. If the chest doesn't fit, nothing fits.

C — Back length Measure from the withers — the highest point of the back where the neck begins — to the base of the tail, where it starts to drop down. Do not measure along the tail itself, only to where it begins. This measurement is essential for jackets, jumpsuits, jumpers and raincoats.

• Never compare sizes based on another dog
• If your dog falls between two sizes, it depends on the cut of the specific product — when in doubt, go bigger

A note on slim breeds For whippets, Italian greyhounds, greyhounds, salukis and similar breeds, getting the right fit matters even more. These dogs have a narrow waist, deep chest and a body shape that differs significantly from most breeds. A size that looks great in a photo can be completely wrong in reality.
